  16. <p>The 45th annual Cannes film festival yields few surprises
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    This year's Cannes Film Festiva; started on a steamy note
  19. with the screening of an uncut Basic Instinct. But lacking the
  20. luster of glamour fests past, Hollywood on the Mediterranean
  21. soon turned into a Basic Bore. Jurors opted for predictable
  22. choices. The Palme d'Or, the festival's highest honor, went to
  23. the Ingmar Bergman-scripted Best Intentions, an elegiac love
  24. story produced for Swedish television. Other top awards went to
  25. director Robert Altman for his wry Hollywood basher The Player
  26. and to actor Tim Robbins for his deft portrayal of an unctuous
  27. studio head in that film.
